Niijima Island in the Izu Islands is the only place in the world where fireproof stone with unique properties is mined.
However, fireproof stone buildings are disappearing at a rate of more than a dozen per year, and preservation efforts are not keeping up.
The fireproof stone materials themselves have been left piled up all over the island, and people are beginning to forget when and why they are there.
This chair is made of fireproof stone bonded simply with mortar.
By staying on the island, the students were able to observe the fireproof stones up close and gain an intuitive understanding of their characteristics.
The materials were donated to the island from stones that had been left unused for a long time, and he carried out the processing and assembly by himself using only a hand saw and trowel.
The island's treasures, left behind by the times, will change form, touch people once again, and one day return to the soil of Niijima.
